Bella Hadid Speaks Out Amidst Controversy Over Olympics Campaign
Bella Hadid has responded to the backlash surrounding her involvement in an Adidas campaign that unintentionally referenced the tragic 1972 Munich Olympics, where 11 Israeli athletes were killed by Palestinian terrorists.
The campaign, promoting the SL72 trainers which originally debuted in 1972, sparked outrage due to its insensitivity.
The 27-year-old supermodel – whose father is Palestinian – stated she was unaware of the historical connection and would never have participated had she known.
She expressed her shock and disappointment over the “lack of sensitivity” in a statement released via Instagram on Monday, 29 July; acknowledging that both her team and Adidas should have been more informed.
Adidas faced criticism for choosing Hadid, a vocal supporter of Palestinian causes, with some groups calling it a massive oversight. The company has since apologised and pulled the campaign, promising revisions.
Hadid condemned the association of Palestinian liberation with terrorism, asserting that Palestine is not synonymous with such acts. She reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for peace and a world free of antisemitism, distancing herself from any form of “hate”.
Despite Adidas’s apologies, Hadid is reportedly considering legal action against the company to address the oversight and its impact.
